EarthCube RCN: Cyberinfrastructure for relieving the burden of metadata in Geosciences and Biology

This RCN will bring together members of the earth science, biology, computer science and library communities to address the gap between the necessity of metadata and the difficulty in providing metadata. Involvement of the geosciences and biosciences communities will ensure integration of data from the two disciplines. Involvement of computer scientists will guide researchers to articulate their needs in a way that can be used to build cyberinfrastructure and use existing infrastructure.…See More

EarthCube Semantics Network RCN

We  broadly announce a response to the NSF EarthCube Research Coordination Network RFP (Amendment I). The preliminary title of the RCN  is "EarthCube Semantics Network (ESN)". It will focus on requirements gathering, education, and information exchange concerning the role of Semantics, Linked Data, and vocabularies for EarthCube. We, Peter Fox (PI), Mark Schildhauer, Tim Finin, Krzysztof Janowicz, and Pascal Hitzler seek to openly engage  specialists, senior, and junior people involved in the…See More

“Governance refers to the processes, structure and organizational elements that determine, within an organization or system of organizations, how power is exercised, how stakeholders have their say, how decisions are made, and how decision makers are held accountable.”  In spring 2012, NSF merged several governance-related Expressions of Interest into a single Governance Working Group, led by the Governance Steering Committee (…See More

Semantics and Ontologies

The proposal seeks to evaluate the role of semantics/ontologies in both discovery and integration of heterogeneous data from all disciplines of geosciences. Semantic technologies that will facilitate achieving such goals will be evaluated. The workshop will provide an open forum for the broader community to provide solutions to these challenges.PI: Krishna Sinha, Virginia Tech, pitlab at vt.educo-PIs: Hassan Babaie, Georgia State USubscribe to the Semantics Group:…See More

Whitepaper - Building earth science cyberenvironments at the working collaboration level

This paper discusses the concept of Informatics Bridging Teams (IBTs). It describes work we are doing at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to develop improved methods for information scientists and geo-scientists to work and collaborate more effectively -- with an end goal of building more robust and reliable cyberinfrastructures at laboratory, organization, community, and national/global scales. The Informatics Bridging Team approach adopts the TWC Methodology and embeds information…See More

Which would you say is your main area of expertise?
Cyberinfrastructure architects or builders and other technologists

I am interested in how to improve the success rate of technologist - scientist partnerships in cyberenvironments. I find that the things currently important to me in this area are expressed nicely in the table of contents of the NSF Report "Cyberenvironment Project Management: Lessons Learned":

Users and technologists need each other to succeed

You must have a target and know how to reach it

Leadership should be a partnership between technologists and domain specialists

Effective project management is essential at all levels

 Communication is crucial

Good software development practices need to be established

Experiment-based software deployment is effective for helping users to own the software

 Cyberinfrastructure is a living entity

I think that these elements must exist in any design we put together.

Movie: BCO-DMO repository data services

Cyndy Chandler was asked to attend EarthCube but had to attend another meeting instead. She asked me to show the attached movie to folks since she could not make it. Here is a link to a version of the movie about Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO) varied data services with subtitles (so you can watch it with the sound turned down if you like!). Feel free to watch it in either WMV or MOV at your leisure...…
