Andrew Maffei replied to Barbara Ransom's discussion It's all about the metadata in the group Technology and CI SolutionsI am interested in how to improve the success rate of technologist - scientist partnerships in cyberenvironments. I find that the things currently important to me in this area are expressed nicely in the table of contents of the NSF Report "Cyberenvironment Project Management: Lessons Learned":
• Users and technologists need each other to succeed
• You must have a target and know how to reach it
• Leadership should be a partnership between technologists and domain specialists
• Effective project management is essential at all levels
• Communication is crucial
• Good software development practices need to be established
• Experiment-based software deployment is effective for helping users to own the software
• Cyberinfrastructure is a living entity
I think that these elements must exist in any design we put together.
Cyndy Chandler was asked to attend EarthCube but had to attend another meeting instead. She asked me to show the attached movie to folks since she could not make it. Here is a link to a version of the movie about Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO) varied data services with subtitles (so you can watch it with the sound turned down if you like!). Feel free to watch it in either WMV or MOV at your leisure...…
