Data Discovery, Mining, Integration

Data discovery, access, and mining are essential functions associated with any cyberinfrastructure that supports data-enabled science. The EarthCube Data Discovery, Access, and Mining (aka DDMA) cluster of activities will assess the state of the art in each of these areas and provide a roadmap for the future. Broad community engagement is a key aspect of this activity. Correspondingly, we will discuss strategies for embracing the needs of the so-called long tail of geoscientists in the areas of discovery, access, and mining, in addition to addressing the needs of established data archives, repositories, and community resources. The DDMA group will consider new paradigms using social networking, semantics, cloud storage and computing, and big data to address future needs in discovery, access, and mining.

Thanks, Cliff. Could you advise how to find out what the new groups/communities are and, as Ruth already asked, how to get engaged with them?

I'm sorry - I didn't realize that some information is lacking.  And, maybe my phrase "evolving into three subgroups" isn't totally accurate -

Via telecon and email, the 11 EoI 1st authors requested and got permission to submit three workshop proposals instead of one.   Because we are a large group, 11 teams, we didn't think we could do much under one 100K umbrella.  That is as far as the "evolution into subgroups" has occurred.

I am posting here now because it was recognized that we need to move planning and discussions to the forum in order to keep everyone informed, and I was trying to do exactly that.  In particular, I am focusing on how we keep the three workshop efforts coordinated (though I also think a longer, more thorough DSSA process would be useful).

Does that help?  I realize it's hard to understand what's going on - I feel like I have only a very tiny viewpoint myself.

Like, Kerstin I am also confused as to how the three groups evolved.  In particular, I would like to be engaged particularly with any discovery community, and would like to at least have a view into the mining and integration areas.  Where are these conversations happening?

Could anybody explain how the evolution into three subgroups happened? There have been no posts to this discussion forum, and there has been no information flow about ongoing planning and the development of a workshop proposal and after an initial phone call. Would be nice to keep the community informed - wasn't this part of the idea?

the WebEx presentation has the EOI numbers included in this group (slide 2). 1084 is among them, but it looks like it should be in the semantics/ontology group.
